When is the best time to come to Vallarta?

Timing can make all the difference when visiting Puerto Vallarta, a popular resort known for its great jungle-backed beaches, its famous grastronomy, spectacular night-life and cultural events, tucked onto Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Every months is good to come to this beautiful town but the best time to visit Puerto Vallarta is between April and June when the weather is pleasant and the room rates are affordable. During these months, rain is scarce and there are fewer tourists compared to the winter high season. If you’re interested in whale watching, however, visit from December to March.

January-March

You’ll see Puerto Vallarta at its best at this time of year, as temperatures usually stay in the mid-70s with very little rain. Evenings can be cool – average lows dip down to 60 degrees Fahrenheit – so pack long sleeves. The trade-off for the outstanding weather is high prices; be prepared for room rates to cost more than $400 a night at some of the area’s best hotels. You can still find some deals on accommodations if you book early enough (several months).

April-June

You’ll notice that the tourist crowds have started to taper off at this time of year and, fortunately, the temperatures still aren’t too hot, with highs resting in the mid-80s. What’s more, the water temperature is balmy and ideal for swimming. And an added bonus: there are some pretty sweet hotel deals at this time of year. If you plan a June visit, know that temperatures are quite warm, with highs in the 90s.

July-September

With averages in the 90s, Puerto Vallarta’s temperatures spike the most in summer, and there are often brief bursts of rain, creating a humid climate. But airfare and hotel rates are usually at their cheapest, so pack an umbrella and enjoy the discounts. Because this resort town is protected by the Banderas Bay, hurricanes are rarely an issue. The last hurricane to directly hit Puerto Vallarta was Hurricane Kenna in 2002.

October-December

October is a decent time to visit Puerto Vallarta. Temperatures range between the mid-70s and high 80s and the room rates are still relatively low. Keep in mind that tourist season begins to perk up again once November hits. Several key festivals occur at this time of year, too, which fill the city with travelers. December marks the start of prime whale watching season in PV.
